SmartBite ("we", "our", "us") operates the SmartBite mobile application (iOS and Android). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our app.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

• Email address — used for account creation and authentication
• Password — securely hashed, never stored in plain text

Content You Create

• Recipes — titles, descriptions, ingredients, steps, cooking times, servings, cuisine type, and meal type
• Recipe images — photos you upload (compressed to 800x600 JPEG)
• Meal plans — your weekly meal assignments
• Shopping lists — items you add or generate from meal plans

Data Generated by the App

• Nutrition analysis results — macro and micronutrient data for your recipes
• Recipe translations — translated versions of your recipes
• Import cache — URLs of previously imported recipes to avoid duplicate processing

Subscription Information

• Subscription status — whether you are on the free or premium plan
• Purchase receipts — handled by Apple App Store or Google Play Store; we do not store payment card details

2. How We Use Your Information

• To provide and maintain the SmartBite service
• To authenticate your identity and protect your account
• To process recipe imports using AI (see Section 4)
• To analyze nutrition content of your recipes
• To translate recipes into your chosen language
• To generate AI-created recipes based on your prompts
• To manage your subscription and enforce usage limits

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate SmartBite:

Supabase

Our backend infrastructure provider. Stores your account data, recipes, and all app content. Supabase processes data in accordance with their Privacy Policy.

Google Gemini API

Used for AI-powered features: recipe import from websites and videos, nutrition analysis, and recipe translation. When you use these features, recipe content (URLs, ingredients, text) is sent to Google's servers for processing. See Google AI Terms.

xAI (Grok)

Used for AI recipe generation. When you use the "AI Generate" feature, your text prompt is sent to xAI's servers. See xAI Privacy Policy.

RevenueCat

Manages in-app subscriptions. RevenueCat receives your anonymous user ID and subscription events. See RevenueCat Privacy Policy.

Apple App Store / Google Play Store

Handle all payment processing for subscriptions. We do not have access to your payment card information.

4. AI Data Processing

SmartBite uses AI to power several features. Here is what data is sent to AI providers:

• Recipe import: The URL you provide and/or the HTML content of the webpage
• AI Generate: Your text prompt describing the recipe you want
• Nutrition analysis: The ingredient list from your recipe
• Translation: The recipe title, description, ingredients, and steps

All AI processing happens server-side through our secure edge functions. API keys are never exposed to the client app. We do not use your data to train AI models.

5. Data Storage and Security

• All data is stored in Supabase with Row-Level Security (RLS) ensuring you can only access your own data
• All API communications use HTTPS encryption
• Authentication tokens are stored securely on your device
• Recipe images are stored in a private storage bucket accessible only to authenticated users
• All server-side functions validate authentication before processing requests

6. Community Recipes

If you choose to make a recipe public, a snapshot of that recipe (title, description, ingredients, steps, image, and your display name) becomes visible to other SmartBite users. You can unpublish a recipe at any time, but copies saved by other users will remain in their libraries.

7. Data Retention and Deletion

• Your data is retained as long as your account is active
• You can delete individual recipes, meal plans, and shopping items at any time
• To delete your account and all associated data, contact us at support@smarterbite.net
• Upon account deletion, all your data (recipes, images, nutrition data, translations, meal plans, shopping lists) will be permanently removed within 30 days

8. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your data
• Export your data in a portable format
• Object to or restrict certain processing

9. Children's Privacy

SmartBite is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected data from a child, please contact us immediately.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of SmartBite after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
